Disappointing The Software Giant's Results Erase More Than $70 Billion From Valuation, Stoking Artificial Intelligence Hype Anxiety.

The tech firm's disappointing quarterly results have slashed over $70bn from the value of the software and data company co-founded by Trump ally Larry Ellison, adding to escalating fears of a speculative bubble in artificial intelligence stocks.

Significant Stock Fall Follows Sales Shortfall

Stock in the firm plunged by eleven and a half percent overnight after it disclosed a weaker-than-anticipated 14% rise in revenues to $16 billion in the latest quarter, while simultaneously disclosed plans to increase its artificial intelligence investment by around $15 billion.

The enterprise recorded disappointing quarterly revenues for the quarter ending in November, with revenue growth at its key cloud services division expanding at a slower pace than anticipated, at 34 percent.

Market Jitters Over Spending and Leverage

Investors were further disappointed by a slower than expected sixty-eight percent growth in income from its infrastructure business.

At the same time, investors were spooked by the firm's raised forecasts for spending on artificial intelligence. It now expects capital expenditure to leap by forty percent to $50bn, with the vast majority of the increase directed toward building server farms.

This aggressive investment strategy comes amid a ballooning leverage, with Oracle's long-term debt having increased by 25 percent over the last twelve months to reach $99.9bn.

"Honestly, the report was not dramatically bad, but it came to confirm fears around heavy AI spending, funded through debt, with an unclear timeline for profitability," noted a senior analyst.

Broader Sector Repercussions and Ecosystem Concerns

Continued exuberance about the potential of AI technology has fueled a leap in company valuations in the past year, but there has been a growing spate of warnings from policymakers and executives who warn equity prices could correct sharply if the market ended up being let down by the progress or adoption of AI technology.

While Oracle has established itself as a key technology provider developing software for major firms worldwide and has in recent years found strength in cloud computing, there are growing concerns about how reliant firms are growing on each other’s financing within the AI ecosystem.

Oracle disclosed that its metric of contractual revenue jumped by 440% over the past year. However, market watchers were skeptical when it emerged that these contracts were propelled by new commitments from major customers like Meta and Amazon.

"While these are two solid customers, it will not allay fears that big tech's AI investments are becoming circular, which leaves it susceptible to a erosion of market faith," stated a research director.

"Overall, robust backlog increase was not enough to alleviate anxiety about AI and the massive amount of investment spending required by companies to develop AI infrastructure."

Broader Sell-Off in AI-Related Stocks

Additional technology stocks subsequently declined in extended trading following the Oracle results. Key movers included:

  • Nvidia: Stock fell by 1.3 percent.
  • Alphabet (Google): Shares declined by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the AI investor shares fell by 7.7 percent on Thursday.
