The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
