No fewer than 13 individuals killed and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
