It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.
New Release Strategy
From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more content, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The One Piece anime had a half-year break that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with others alternatively handling more material or more to compensate for time.
It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most releasing each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
