New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
