Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent honors show draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
