The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
